SISE & ERA

ERA activities can be seen as an enabler for the effort to build a SISE, a Single Information System in Europe for the Environment. If an ERA “ICT for Environmental Sustainability” should be established, the area under investigation has to be outlined. According to (O’Flaherty 2008) 2 examples of areas linking ICT and environmental topics should comprise:

  1. Application/services
  2. SISE Open Semantics and Standards
  3. Data Interoperability and Web Communities
  4. Data Visualisation and Modelling including Risk Assessment
  5. SEIS Deployment Models

More in detail, monitoring networks with mobile devices and the flexible chaining of distributed environmental services were highlighted, including

  • Methods and protocols for service discovery and chaining
  • Automated data fusion, services and quantitative quality assessment
  • Semantics, thesauri, ontology services and standardisation
  • Chaining of models and predictive tools
  • On-demand distributed geo-processing and services
  • Interactive, Web-based 3D/4D analysis and visualisation tools
  • Integration of heterogeneous geo-spatial sources
  • Web 2.0 collaborative community and semantically enhanced services.

This set of recommendations agrees strongly with the results developed within the ICT-ENSURE project.

For building an ERA-Net, a number of actors like networks, communities, research institutes, universities, software developers and experts in general have to be identified for capacity building. Further more, an analysis of research programmes, projects and actions in selected areas of relevance has to be undertaken as performed for ICT-ENSURE with the goal to supporting the structuring of research in the field of ICT for environmental sustainability.

Several steps in this direction were accomplished in the ICT-ENSURE work package WP7.1 “Analysis of Information Sources for an Integrated Environmental Information Space”, in the WP2 “Framework and System Model of ICT in Environmental Sustainability”, and, to a broader extent, in the WP8 Scientific Surveys.
